The great cell phone war, as you might call it, has many parents toying with the decision to get a cellular device for their younger children. While there are certainly some benefits, like the ability to contact your child anytime, there are just as many concerns. Picking the right device is important.
Check with Your Provider
Start out by asking your current service provider what children-friendly options they provide. For example, T-Mobile as a family plan that lets parents limit the number of minutes on each phone and when it can be used. AT&T and others have similar options, so just ask. If it’s prepaid plans you want check out Boost Mobile, Ting, or Virgin Mobile.
Kajeet
Kajeet has hit the nail on the head with phones and plans that carry maximum parental control. Set times when your child’s phone can and can’t be used, control whom they contact, decide who pays for which calls (the parent or the child), and limit which websites they can view. The phones come with GPS to track your child’s location. You can even receive an email when your kid arrives somewhere, such as school or home.
If you don’t want to buy a new phone, bring your own device, as long as it’s from Sprint. Activation is free and there is no contract. Kajeet’s cheapest plan is pay-as-you-go for just $5 a month. (1)
Firefly glowPhone
One of the most basic phones for tweens is the Firefly glowPhone. The phone itself is durable with large buttons, including dedicated keys just for calling Mom and Dad. You manage all calls and texting. The phone has a few fun features that include: built-in games, customizable ringtones, wallpapers, and a flashlight.
The glowPhone will cost you $50. Then you must purchase a SIM card from another carrier. AT&T, T-Mobile, and several smaller carriers use SIM cards. Verizon and Sprint do not. You can find them at most stores that sell electronics, or just do an online search for “prepaid SIM cards.” (2)
Kytephone App
Perhaps the easiest solution is to turn your smartphone into a kid’s phone. Just activate the Kytephone app and you’re good to go. Parents can control who their kids contact; limit what apps they can use and for how long. It automatically blocks popups and inappropriate content. The GPS tracking feature allows you to keep tabs on your kid. And if you want to know what they’ve been up to on their phone, you can check out their recent activity. All of it can be managed from your own device or computer. The Kytephone app is free, but only available for Android devices. (3)
