The Scenario
You’re sitting in the movie theatre watching the credits scroll past as the lights come on and it’s finally time to stand up and do a full stretch. As you push out of your chair, you watch in horror as the smartphone you had sitting in your lap hurdles in slow motion towards the hard ground below. Instinctively you reach out, attempting to save what you consider one of your very closest friends. But you’re too late. With a sickening feeling you pick up the phone and turn it over to discover what appears to be a spiderweb of cracks crisscrossing your screen.
Let’s face it, whether it involves a toilet, a balcony, or one of the countless other perils faced by a smartphone user, most of us have had a costly mishap involving our smartphones. A good phone case can go a long way to protect your phone from the many accidents that could befall it. When choosing a good case, there are two main things to look for:
Material
There is a large variety of materials available for smartphone cases. The rigid materials, such as plastic, metal, or even wood can offer robust protection but sometimes at a high price. Those materials tend to crack or splinter so although they may save your phone when dropped, the case itself might not survive the fall. Rubber or a synthetic, rubber-like material is good because it fits snug around the phone with the added benefit of giving the phone extra grip and reducing the likelihood of dropping it.
Accessibility
You’ll find some cases that offer your phone what seems to amount to its own suit of armor. These cases often fully cover both the front and the back of the phone. The problem with these cases is that they often make it difficult to interact with the phone itself because you are trying to perform tasks through a layer of material. Even if a case surrounds the front of the phone, make sure the touchscreen itself is accessible for use.
What if it’s too late?
This is all well and good, but what if one of the dreaded scenarios above has already taken place and your phone is smashed, cracked, chipped or wet? If you don’t want to buy a new phone you have two options:
DIY Kit
These kits are available all over the internet. Many smartphone users opt for these kits only to be very disappointed with how complex the directions are and how cheap the part is. Replacing a screen on a smartphone usually means taking the entire phone apart, which can end up damaging the phone beyond repair.
