Common Cell Phone Problems: Drying a Wet Phone

cell phone in water

Our society’s high dependency on cell phones can make even the smallest problem a huge inconvenience. Luckily, some of the most common cell phone problems have easy fixes. In this three part series, we will take a look at four of the most common problems experienced by cell phone users. If these do-it-yourself solutions don’t work, make sure you take your phone into an experienced cell phone repair store to get your phone up and running.

Problem #1: Water Damage
It is common knowledge that cell phones and water don’t mix. However, it often happens that a cell phone gets dropped in a pool, sink, or toilet, left out in the rain, or is otherwise exposed to water. Fortunately, a good dousing does not need to signal the end of your cell phone’s life.

If your phone gets wet and stops working, the first thing to do is to disconnect the battery and any other removable parts. Set each part out on a dry surface or in a bowl of uncooked rice (the rice will absorb the water). NEVER USE A BLOW DRYER TO DRY OUT YOUR PHONE.

The second step is to give it adequate time to completely dry. This can take a while, so distract yourself with other activities or by leaving the house to avoid the temptation of turning the phone back on before it is completely dry. Trying to turn the phone on when its not completely dry will only make the problem worse, as it will push the water deeper into your phone and could cause an electrical short or further damage.

Once your phone is completely dry, re-assemble your cell phone and push the power button. At this point it should work normally.
