Fitness Apps For the Win

Runner woman feet running on road closeup on shoe.Another New Year is here and like all New Years as of late, the number one resolution is to get fit and lose weight. However, despite the popularity of making this resolution, those that actually go through with it to the end aren’t usually part of a large crowd. With so many health issues on the rise that are mostly preventable with good health practices and exercise, it is more crucial than ever that people are able to reach their health goals. This New Year’s, we may have some new weapons in the fight: health apps.

Health and fitness apps have been around for a while, but they haven’t always been as sophisticated as they are now. Newer apps are designed to take advantage of larger data streams, GPS access, and peripherals for your portables. These apps are constantly recording data and making adjustments to your routine based on that data. Apps like Nike Fitness Club update with new workouts created by professionals, which include features like video instructions and music playlists. BackCountry Navigator PRO GPS for Android and MotionX for iOS are popular hiking apps that include features like access to trail maps and the ability to set waypoints/markers.

Some apps even take it a step further by interacting with the users:

  • Rock My Run attempts to match music to your workout by choosing songs with various levels of tempo, volume, and intensity.

  • Cody is a popular app for iOS that puts you in a community of fitness. Users upload their own workouts while other users like their favorites and offer advice.

  • Fit Star is an app co-created by NFL star Tony Gonzalez which includes multi-angle videos for all his workouts. Fit Star keeps track of your progress and just when you think you’ve got the hang of your routine, it will throw in some additional steps to keep you progressing forward.

  • Fitness Fast offers multi angle videos, progressing workouts, and as you improve, you upload photos so you (and the program) can analyze the success of your workouts first hand.
