What Message is Your Ringtone Sending?

Man talking on the phoneWhen your cell phone rings the conversation is not just between you and the person on the other line. Your ringtone just sent a message to everyone within earshot. People will instantly make assumptions.

First of all, the fact that you have a personalized ringtone at all means you want to stand out from the crowd. What else does your ringtone say about you?

Hip-hop or R&B: You’re young at heart, or just young. You also might be a bit impatient – one who doesn’t like to wait until the car stops to answer that call or text.

Classic Rock or Oldies: You’re showing your age. You either lived during the Elvis era or wish you did. You’re also a romantic who likes to dance (if you know how).

Movie/TV show theme songs:  A romantic who longs for adventure. Listening to the ringtone almost makes you feel like you’re living some part of your fairytale dream.

Classical: You want to appear clever but aren’t fooling anyone into thinking you’re a musical genius. Perhaps you wish to enjoy the finer things in life although you’re not quite there yet. True classical artists usually don’t have ringtones.

Your own recorded voice: You’re self-obsessed.

Animal sounds: You think you’re funnier than you really are as you watch people turn their heads at each “bark” or “oink.” Or you might just be a huge animal lover.

Camouflage: These are natural sounds like birds chirping, water, or a cough. You’re a people pleaser because you don’t want to distract others with your annoying ringtone. And you have a slight sense of humor.

Default ringtone: You don’t have time to deal with mundane things like customizing your ringtone, or you just don’t care enough. Perhaps you think the process of downloading ringtones would be too complicated or you’re so indecisive that it’s best to just avoid it all together. There’s nothing wrong with an old-fashioned “bring bring.” You only hear it for five seconds anyway right?

Silent or vibrate: You’re not like the majority of the population that’s attached at the hip to their phone. You have more important things to do than answer it all day long. You’re typically considerate, respectful, and eager to please others.

Often people choose ringtones that reflect their mood during a particular stage of life. A single person might choose something like Queen’s “Find Me Somebody to Love.” Someone who is already in-love will groove to a romance song. While those independent youngsters might just play party songs.

A ringtone can also tell you something about the caller. Often we assign individual ringtones to our contacts. A lover’s tune for a spouse, a warning siren for a boss, something fun for a best friend. Songs affect our mood so when someone calls you’ve immediately created a mental image by what you hear, whether positive or negative. Plus when the phone rings from across the room you can decide whether or not it’s a priority.
